Nebraska Wesleyan warns of vehicle break-ins around campus
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska Wesleyan University sent out a safety reminder to students and staff this week after several vehicle break-ins on and around campus.
Lincoln Police said since the start of the year, there have been about 140 vehicles stolen in Lincoln, 46 of which were left unlocked.
There’s also been more than 230 thefts from vehicles so far this year.

Kellan Heavican, a spokesman for Wesleyan, said there was a recent uptick in vehicle thefts near campus.
“Remove your valuables and lock your cars,” he said. “We want to make sure that when they come here that they feel safe and that their things are protected.”

Students said campus is usually a safe place, and they feel comfortable parking on streets in the area.
Keshaun Bell said after hearing about the recent break-ins, he’ll be taking precautions.
“Losing something that’s yours, I don’t think that’s cool, and I don’t want that on anybody else,” he said. “I just make sure I have everything on me just to be safe and lock everything up.”
Lincoln Police advise making it a routine to secure your car every night.
That means locking your doors, removing valuables and weapons, and parking in well-lit areas or a closed garage.
Campus security will also be out watching to stop future thefts.
“We have security cameras around surveilling the parking lot that are recording so we can go back and look,” Heavican said. “We also remind our campus community, ‘Hey if you see something suspicious, say something.'”
