YMCA gears up for swimsuit drive for Lincoln kids learning to swim

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The YMCA of Lincoln is gathering swimsuits and raising money to support a program that teaches kids to swim.

This drive helps support over 300 kids enrolled in grant-based swimming lessons, which are a collaboration among the Y, Lincoln Public Schools and the Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

“The world is 70% water, and kids are 100% curious,” said Tabetha Burnham, the YMCA aquatics director. “It’s really important to teach kids boundaries around water and swim skills.”

Two-thirds of drownings happen between May and August, according to Tabetha.

Some kids may not have the gear they need, but the community can help out by donating new or gently used swimsuits at any local YMCA location.

Both girls’ and boys’ swimsuits from sizes XS to XL are needed, and one-pieces are preferred.

Over 1,000 students have been provided with swimming lessons and swimsuits so far in the program, which is starting its fourth year.
