Northern lights may be visible tonight; pleasant forecast into the weekend
Similar start to Friday so far – quiet conditions with temperatures falling around 50° this morning. We continue a fantastic stretch of weather today and into Mother’s Day weekend.
Highs will be slightly warmer again today and throughout the next few days, slightly warmer than the average temperature of 73° at this time of year. Majority of these next few days will be dry, too.
Later tonight, the International Space Station will be passing overhead once again. It should be visible for about six minutes around 10:45 p.m. Friday night.
That isn’t the only thing space-related to get excited about – the northern lights may be visible for all of us in Nebraska late tonight!
It’s important to keep in mind that viewing the northern lights is never a guarantee, as these events can be unpredictable. That being said, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued its first G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch (the sun has been active with solar flares and the like) since January of 2005.
Experts say this is an unusual event, so it may be worth trying to escape city lights to try and see it! Peak viewing hours will be around 1 -4 a.m. early Saturday morning.
Timing out impacts to Mother’s Day, there will be some light showers possible in the morning especially around the Kansas border before better forcing would spark some showers and thunderstorms in southeast Nebraska by Sunday evening (after about 7 p.m.).
That will carry into early Monday, with the next best chance for showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday.
