Man sentenced to prison for deadly downtown Lincoln assault

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man will spend at least a decade behind bars for fatally punching a man downtown last summer.

Judge Matthew Mellor sentenced 23-year-old Angel Rodriguez Alvis on Friday to 23 to 26 years in prison.

He will be given credit for 195 days already served and will be eligible for parole in about 11 years.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 27, Rodriguez Alvis and two other people assaulted James Baylor near 13th and P streets.

Police said Rodriguez Alvis punched Baylor in the face.

Baylor fell and hit his head on the sidewalk. He was taken to a hospital with a brain bleed and other injuries.

Baylor, 55, died nine days later.

Rodriguez Alvis pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter, terroristic threats and abuse of a vulnerable adult.
