‘I’m scared to sleep’: Rocks shatter windows and sense of peace in northwest Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln woman is living in fear after vandals threw rocks through her windows.
“I don’t understand; why me?” Mary Delvaux said. “I never did anything to anybody, and I’m a good person.”
On Friday, the 78-year-old French immigrant was enjoying a quiet evening at her home near First and Adams streets.
She was watching TV when her cat started acting strange.
She got up to check things out and discovered that large rocks had shattered two of her windows, one of which was right above her bed.
Her daughter, Diane Radniecki, lives next door. She came over as soon as she heard.
“I was surprised because we’ve lived here since 2015, and nothing like that had ever happened here,” Radniecki said. “Well, we’re not immune.”
Delvaux has no clue who would have done this, and she’s scared it could become something more serious.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do next,” she said. “Am I going to be murdered next or what? I don’t know. I’m scared to sleep by myself.”
Delvaux reported the vandalism to the police.
Radniecki quickly realized this was part of a string of vandalisms in the area.
The Lincoln Police Department’s website shows at least 10 residents within a 1-mile radius reported having their windows broken within the past month.
Five homes have been vandalized in the past four days.
Channel 8 reached out to LPD to see if police have any suspects, but they haven’t provided any information.
“They didn’t have any leads of people because it was done late in the evening and under the cover of darkness,” Radniecki said.
Delvaux said she can’t sleep at night.
Her daughter covered her bedroom window with a blanket because Delvaux felt like she was being watched.
“Sure, I’m next to my daughter, but I don’t feel any safer,” Delvaux said. “I felt that way a long time ago, but not anymore.”
Radniecki has a message for the vandals:
“Stop destroying other people’s lives. Throwing rocks and damaging other people’s property is not fun. … You invade their feelings of safety. Just leave people alone.”
