Lincoln man updates free website to help homeowners protest property valuations

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lincoln man is once again coming to the rescue of people wanting to protest their home valuations.

Gordon Smith, a software developer, created a website last year to provide accessible information to homeowners.

At first, he was not going to update it this year.

“I was on the fence for this year because I didn’t really know how many changes there was going to be,” Smith said.

But he changed his mind last weekend because of the number of emails he received from people asking for it.

The site will find homes nearby that are similar to yours.

If they are valued differently than yours, you might get the assessor’s office to change its mind.

Smith created the website after an unexpected increase in his valuation.

He tried to protest it but had a hard time.

“It was really hard to find what it was that I needed to provide,” he said.

Smith said because of his own experience, he now wants to ease the process for others.

Homeowners have until July 1 to protest their assessments.
