York Public Schools proposes $40 million bond issue for elementary expansion

YORK, Neb. (KLKN) – The York school board has called for a school bond election on Nov. 5.

The proposed project to expand York Elementary School will cost $39.5 million.

It will increase property taxes for the average York homeowner with a $208,000 house by about $240 per year.

Here’s a look at the project. Highlighted sections are the new additions.

Site Plan

The expansion would include:

  • 17 additional classrooms for preschool to fifth grade
  • More teacher collaboration space
  • Added restrooms
  • Expanded cafeteria
  • Added activity space

This expansion is to make room for the increasing student population.

Mitch Bartholomew, superintendent of York Public Schools, said the student population increases from 2% to 3% every year.

“If you see that growth for five, six, seven, 10 years, which we’ve seen, then you’ve flat ran out of room,” he said. “That’s where we’re at today.”

For voters interested in learning more, York Public Schools will host meetings at the town hall on Sept. 16, Sept. 25, Oct. 7 and Oct. 16.
