National social media posts cause ‘disruption’ at Lincoln high schools

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — National social media posts about school violence are spreading at Lincoln high schools, the district said.

In letters to parents on Wednesday, Lincoln Southwest and Lincoln Southeast high schools said the posts were causing a “disruption.”

Lincoln Public Schools said students should report any threats they see but should not repost them.

“Sharing these internet threats through test messages and on social media causes panic and floods reporting channels, making it harder for police to investigate the origination of the threats,” the letters said. “This also causes a substantial disruption to the school day and harms student mental health.”

Lincoln Southeast also sent an email to students reassuring them that LPS investigates all threats.

“School safety takes all of us,” the email said. “Let’s work together to keep each other safe and focused on what we are here to do — LEARN!”
