Name That Snowplow: City of Lincoln announces 2024 snowplow naming contest

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department on Tuesday invited the community to participate in the Name That Snowplow contest.

Lincolnites can now submit snowplow names through late November, and vote for favorites through early January.

The winning names will appear on eight city snowplows.

“Winter in Lincoln is an opportunity for our community to come together and embrace the season,” said LTU Director Liz Elliott. “These snowplows are symbols of our dedication to keeping Lincoln safe on city streets. To get into the spirit of winter, we invite residents to join in the fun once again by naming more snowplows.”

This is the second year for the Name That Snowplow contest. In 2023, the community submitted more than 1,700 names, with 25 of them being selected for final consideration.

The eight names that were selected in 2023 were:

  • Clearopathra
  • Scoop Dogg
  • PlowyMcPlowface
  • Darth Blader
  • Austin Plowers
  • Truck Norris
  • AntiSnowcial
  • Snow Big Red

The contest timeline for 2024 is as follows:

  • Nov. 12 through Nov. 26 – The community is invited to submit snowplow names here.
  • Dec. 23 through Jan. 3rd – Community members may vote for their favorite snowplow names here.
  • Week of Jan. 13 – LTU will announce the winners. The winning names will be displayed on city snowplows. Winners will also receive free prizes from LTU.

The contest guidelines are as follows:

  • To fit on the trucks, snowplow name submissions must be 17 characters or less, including spaces.
  • The name cannot include your name.
  • No profanity or inappropriate language is permitted.
  • If multiple people submit the same name, the person who submits the name first will be selected.
  • Employees and family members of the City of Lincoln are excluded from participation in the contest.
  • Names or words protected by copyright or trademark will not be accepted.
  • By submitting your entry, you agree to the City of Lincoln using your submitted entry in a public and official capacity.
  • Names of the winning participants will be shared in a news release, on the City of Lincoln website, and on City of Lincoln social media sites.
  • If your snowplow name is selected, you will be notified via phone or email. Winners will be able to pick up free prizes from Lincoln Transportation and Utilities at 555 South 10th Street, Suite 208.
