LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man’s New Year’s Day celebration led to his arrest, the Lincoln Police Department says.

Just after midnight, police were sent to a home near 30th and Apple streets on a report of a man firing a gun into the air.

When officers arrived, they spotted the suspect — a 44-year-old man from Canon, Georgia — lighting off bottle rockets and fireworks, police said.

The man told officers he didn’t have a gun — but during a search, they found a 9 mm handgun in his back pocket, according to police.

Officers also discovered 2.1 grams of marijuana in his coat, police said.

Investigators later determined he shot the gun and they found “multiple” shell casings by a nearby fence.

The man was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm.  He was also cited on suspicion of possessing marijuana and discharging unlawful fireworks.
