City outlines plan for new roundabout in Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The City of Lincoln held an open house Tuesday to discuss a proposal to build a new roundabout.
The project would revamp the Calvert Street intersections with 48th and 56th streets. The intersection at 56th Street would be turned into a roundabout.
The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department said it would improve traffic efficiency, with better mobility and reliability than the existing traffic lights.
LTU Assistant Director Thomas Shafer also said it would save taxpayers money in the long term because roundabouts are cheaper to maintain.
The roundabout would be a two-lane system like seen on the roundabout at 14th and Superior streets.
The cost of the proposed project would total to $3.63 million, and funding would come from both federal and local sources.
If approved, construction would begin as early as summer of 2027 and be completed by fall of 2028.
