LFR extinguishes flames at east Lincoln Walgreens after fire and burglar alarms go off

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Fire & Rescue put out a fire in a Walgreens late Friday night.

Just after 11:20 p.m., LFR and the Lincoln Police Department responded to the drug store near 70th and O streets on both a fire alarm and burglar alarm, authorities said.

When firefighters got inside the Walgreens, they saw smoke, which they traced to the pharmacy area.

They found a fire there that had already been mostly extinguished by sprinklers, according to LFR Battalion Chief Jeremy Gegg.

“The building sprinkler system did exactly what it was supposed to do and kept the fire contained,” he said.

Crews quickly put out the rest of the flames, Gegg said.

Walgreens was closed at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported.

LFR said the cause of the blaze and the amount of damage are under investigation.

Gegg said investigators “would look into” why both the burglar and fire alarm went off.

“The burglar alarm could have been coincidental to the fire starting,” he said. “It’s just hard to say at this point.”

It’s not known when the Walgreens will be able to reopen.
