Lincoln Police Department’s newest recruits embark on first day for understaffed agency
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Twenty-two new recruits at the Lincoln Police Department kicked off their first day with the agency Thursday.
Assistant Police chief Ryan Dale says it’s a relief as the recruits begin a multi-week training process.
The new officers leave the department just three people short of its authorized strength, which is closest LPD has been to full capacity since 2020.
“All of our staff has been working really hard while we’ve been understaffed and everyone is really excited to get the support,” Dale said.
The recruits are spending their first day in the office at the city county building but will soon be getting hands on experience.
Dale said LPD isn’t done filling out its staff, but the agency is pushing harder to get more recruits in the door and on the streets of Lincoln.
“We can’t let our guard down,” Dale said. “We have to continue to do things to make sure this is a great place to work, and to retain the great staff who we already have.”
For those considering joining the force, Dale says to start by asking questions to educate yourself and don’t be afraid of approaching a recruiter or officer.
