LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Public Schools on Tuesday announced Omaha Buena Vista will forfeit its upcoming football game against Lincoln Southwest.

In a letter to families, officials from Omaha Buena Vista cited injuries:

“The decision is based on the number of students medically cleared to play and follows a thoughtful discussion between our coaching staff and school administration,” shared Buena Vista Principal Carrie Carr in a letter to families. “We know this is disappointing for our student-athletes, their families, our competitors and our school communities. Nothing is more important to us than the health and wellbeing of the students we serve.”

Lincoln Southwest athletic director also wrote to families, “We understand and appreciate them putting student safety and wellbeing first. We wish them a speedy recovery and good health.”

The Silver Hawks were set to face off against the Bison on Thursday.

Lincoln Southwest will play its last regular season game against Omaha North on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Union Bank Stadium.

This is the second Class A high school to forfeit a football game this season.

Lincoln High forfeited its game against Millard South last Friday.
