LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola will undergo surgery this week for a broken fibula, head coach Matt Rhule said Monday.

Raiola, Nebraska’s second-year starting quarterback, broke his fibula after being sacked in the third quarter of the game against No. 23 USC.

He will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to the injury.

“The kid had a broken leg and he was warming up and begging me to play,” Rhule said. “That’s all you got to know about that kid to know who he is.”

Backup freshman QB TJ Lateef will now take over as the Huskers’ starting quarterback.  In the USC game, Lateef rushed six times for 18 yards and completed five passes for 7 yards.

“I’m going to do the best job I can for TJ Lateef, because leaders insert themselves in a point of friction to try and take stress off,” Rhule said.

Lateef’s first opportunity as the starting quarterback will be on the road against UCLA on Saturday.
