Lincoln Police investigating vandalism at Sheridan Elementary School
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department is investigating vandalism at a Lincoln elementary school.
Just before 10:45 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to Sheridan Elementary School after a neighbor reported seeing graffiti on the playground.
LPD said the vandalism happened sometime between Thursday night and Saturday morning.
The graffiti included a swastika, the n-word and large stylized W’s in red paint, causing $15,000 in damage.
Lincoln Public Schools sent a letter to families regarding the incident:
“At Sheridan, we pride ourselves on being a community of inclusion and belonging. We teach students to be safe, responsible, and respectful. We need to be respectful to ourselves, our peers, our teachers and our school. We need to honor each other’s space and engage in positive interactions. Most importantly, we need to remember to be kind to one another.
While we do not know who in the community committed this terrible act, families, we ask that you also reinforce these lessons at home. We ask for your support in ensuring each and every student continues to be a positive peer and not use unkind language towards their friends. Please have a conversation with your child about the power of their words and how to use them to spread kindness so we can continue to have an amazing school year.”
LPS said the graffiti was cleaned up on Saturday. Principal Ashley Stizman thanked the community for a quick response:
“I want to extend a sincere THANK YOU to everyone in the community for the quick response and kind hearts in cleaning up the graffiti at the playground. The efforts to restore this space within just a few hours of it being reported show the incredible pride and care we all share for our school community and neighborhood.”
The investigation is ongoing.
