“Saving College Sports” roundtable at the White House Friday, Trump will sign an executive order
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – White House hosted a roundtable talk Friday surrounding the state of college athletics.
The conversation, led by President Donald Trump, featured several former college coaches, politicians, power conference commissioners, and University Presidents including Dr. Jeffrey Gold from Nebraska.
They talked about wanting to address things like eligibility, NIL, the transfer portal, but also wanting to shift the focus on ensuring student athletes get a college education.
“How much does anybody talk about getting an education anymore? Nobody talks about it at all,” said Nick Saban, former Alabama football Head Coach, and current American sportscaster. “It’s the most important thing any of these student athletes can do at enhancing the future.
NCAA President Charlie Baker also agreed with most of what everyone discussed.
“Everything everybody has said about the challenges we face at this particular point in time is true.”
President Trump insisted there will be an executive order signed within a week.
“I’m going to write an executive order, and the executive order is going to be based on great common sense,” Trump said. “It’s going to let colleges survive, and players survive.
Lawmakers also spoke highly of the SCORE Act. It’s a proposal that would focus on regulating and establishing NIL.
The Big Ten Conference released a statement regarding this discussion stating in part quote
“Federal action on college sports is long overdue, and we stand with a broad coalition of conferences, student athletes, coaches, and advocates in supporting the score act. We look forward to working with president trump and congress to enact meaningful reform for student athletes across the country.”
