‘Take some of the pressure off’: Seward community donating items to farmers affected by wildfires

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — What started as a small call for help is quickly turning into a community-wide effort.

With the wildfires in western Nebraska burning more than 700,000 acres, many are stepping up to help those impacted.

Trever Trebilcock started gathering items to take to the farmers affected.

“It’s their livelihood that is being messed with right now, and they’re already struggling with a drought, and now this fire is just taking everything away—their houses, fences,” he said. “Just on Facebook alone, you can see how bad it is. It’s just hard to watch and not be able to do anything from home.”

He plans to make the five-hour drive to Oshkosh to distribute items such as hay, fencing and equipment.

“Just trying to help, at least take some of the pressure off of them,” he said.

And for him, lending a helping hand to that community hits close to home.

“I just wanted to do something to help,” he said. “I grew up there in Oshkosh so being this far away, the most I can do to help from here. It seemed like the right thing to do.”

After posting on social media about taking in donations, Trebilcock said the response from those willing to help has been nothing short of Nebraska nice.

“It’s coming from everywhere,” he said. “As fast as this grew, it’s just amazing. You can’t say enough about Nebraska.”
