Medical Cannabis Approved for Nebraskans

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen gave approval to a new state regulatory code that allows medical cannabis. Patients are able to possess 5 ounces of cannabis in a 30-day period.

In the November 2024 election, 71% of Nebraskan voters voted ‘yes’ to medical marijuana.

On July 2, Gov. Pillen approved permanent regulations for medical marijuana, a day after Attorney General Mike Hilgers approved them.

In his statement, Hilgers wrote, “Any medical cannabis regulations that allow access to marijuana untethered to a plausibly medical purpose without adequate patient protections are “medical” in name only and may slip into a preempted recreational marijuana scheme.”

The Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) said Gov. Pillen and the attorney general did not support what Nebraskans wanted.

“He approved a program designed to be restrictive, limiting products, amounts, and access, and creating barriers that will keep patients waiting,” said NMM. “These regulations do not reflect patient needs, or the clear will of 71% of Nebraska voters.”

The permanent regulations for medical marijuana will become a permanent fixture of the state code on Monday, July 5.
