NSEA says families should have been informed about electric shock gloves in OPS schools

OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) — After news of electric shock gloves being used bye Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents broke, reports of Omaha Police Department (OPD) officers using the gloves in schools have surfaced.

The gloves are intended to be used by school resource officers.

The Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA) said the school, educators and families should have been informed.

“We recognize that school resource officers face challenging situations and need appropriate training and resources to keep students and staff safe,” NSEA said. “But a use-of-force tool only addresses a situation after it has escalated. Instead, we should be prioritizing what educators have long asked for: additional investments in behavioral supports, mental-health resources, and other interventions that would address student needs before there is an incident.”
