Cornfields withstand hardships for Husker Harvest Days
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — After a dry spring and multiple severe storms, officials with the organization hosting Husker Harvest Days ensure demonstration fields are ready for the later celebrations.
Officials say the corn was planted on April 14, right on time.
“Everyone knew we got it planted on time and everything was good,” said Jason Luebbe, farm manager for Husker Harvest Days. “Then Mother Nature rolled in and it was pretty dry for a little bit. We had to make about three or four circles to get the corn out of the ground.”
Luebbe said there were a few issues, including the storms, dryness and a weed issue that stemmed from the dehydration. Managers of the field remediated the situations by spraying herbicides and keeping the corn strong against the storms.
Organizers say the corn demonstration fields are among the most-watched fields in Nebraska and during the event. The corn is expected to be in great shape for Husker Harvest Days on Sep. 15-17.
