Police identify victim in northeast Lincoln homicide

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department released the name of the 19-year-old victim in a deadly shooting this week.

LPD said Nyandeng Chol of Lincoln died from a gunshot wound suffered late Tuesday night.

Police said Tyler Benzel, 37, is in Lancaster County jail. He was arrested for first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

LPD said the incident happened around 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday when officers responded to a disturbance involving juveniles in the area of N. 47th St. and Cleveland Ave.

While interviewing those on the scene, officers heard a gunshot near N. 46th St. and Madison Ave.

LPD said after interview witnesses in the area, a group was arguing with Benzel’s wife near that intersection. Police said Benzel left his property and walked over to the place the argument was taking place.

LPD said Benzel made some verbal threats toward the group before raising a gun and firing.

Officers arrived minutes later and found Chol with a single gunshot wound, according to police. They performed life-saving measures on her before she was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Police said Benzel was taken into custody without incident. LPD said the murder weapon was found.
