Former Lincoln Fire Chief dies

Retired Lincoln Fire Chief Michael Merwick has died at the age of 76.

According to his obituary, he passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 30th.

Chief Merwick served the city of Lincoln for 46 years. The majority of that career was spent as the Chief for Lincoln Fire and Rescue from 1980-1999.

In a tweet, LFR said he was an amazing leader and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

After serving as Fire Chief for 20 years, Merwick was appointed to the Director of Building and Safety. During his 46 years of service to the City of Lincoln, he also volunteered and was a Board member with numerous organizations, including the Salvation Army. 

Merwick also graduated Pius X High School and attended UNL. 

His obituary also says that his greatest love in retirement was his family, friends and enjoying life on the acreage he and his wife had lived for 38 years.

A Celebration of Life services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13th at the Lincoln FireFighter’s Reception Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for future designation.
