A neighbor reacts to Juniata shootout, hears shots fired
One man is dead, and a state trooper is injured after a shootout that happened in a home in Juniata, Wednesday morning.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — One man is dead, and a state trooper is injured after a shootout that happened in a home in Juniata, Wednesday morning. On Wednesday afternoon, the scene is still active as state troopers and SWAT team members are still investigating.
Safety was Wayne Peters’ main concern when he heard gunshots in Juniata early Wednesday morning.
“Safety. Probably shouldn’t have been watching out the door but you know people are,” said Wayne Peters, a resident. “We have to see what’s going on.”
Around midnight, Peters says he and his wife received an alarm on his phone.
It said we have an active shooter in the area, shelter in place,” said Peters. “We looked out the window and we can see law enforcement vehicles in the road.”
Peters and other neighbors say the shots rang throughout the night, making sleeping a hard task to do.
“I heard about 12 total it sounded like small arms were fired, probably nine-millimeter,” said Peters. “The last ones like rifle shots and it was done.”
Officials say the trooper who was shot in the arm was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter Brooks Hacker is dead after police returned fire.
“I feel sorry for the officer,” adds Peters. “I mean it was not life-threatening, but still has to be painful.”
