LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A former substitute teacher at Raymond Central Middle School was cited on Wednesday after making several “inappropriate and disturbing” comments during class.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office cited 44-year-old Samuel Carman for two counts of disturbing the peace. According to the school district, Carman was fired the day of the incident.

On April 24, deputies were sent to the middle school regarding a belated disturbance.

According to the sheriff’s office, Carman had made several inappropriate and disturbing comments toward sixth-grade students in the band and choir classes, causing several students to leave the class to alert other teachers.

“They were disturbing,” Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. “There were some comments about threats. I think he started out joking, and it just turned very odd, as the children told us.”

The sheriff’s office said it interviewed 25 sixth graders during the investigation.

“They [the students] were being loud, and I’m sure he would want to take back some of those not-so-intelligent comments he made toward them,” Houchin said. “We felt through the 25 interviews that what he was doing was so inappropriate that he needed to be cited.”

According to the school district, there was increased security on campus until the sheriff’s office completed its investigation.
