Lincoln officers return to work despite injuries, others still recovering after riots

Police said water bottles – including some possibly filled with gasoline – were thrown at officers, as well as rocks, razor blades and other objects. Dozens of fireworks were also shot members of law enforcement.
“Lots of burns, lacerations, clothing burns, lots and lots of bruises, you know, things like that,” Officer Erin Spilker said.
One officer suffered significant injuries and will be off work “for quite some time,” Spilker said, adding that many officers wanted to get back to work even though they are injured.
Sheriff Terry Wagner said one Lancaster County deputy suffered a cut to their knee Sunday night.
Protesters gathered once again Wednesday night. The demonstration remained peaceful throughout, with no problems or arrests, Spilker said. Officers escorted the protesters through the streets, helping them stay out of intersections and in one lane so traffic could move uninterrupted.
The protest, which marks the the fifth in as many nights in Lincoln. It followed an emotional gathering between police and black community leaders and pastors at the Malone Center Wednesday afternoon.
“These conversations are exactly what you need,” Spilker said.
