Lincoln officials urge people to stay safe Monday; heat index could reach 109

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – With stifling heat in Lincoln on Monday, officials are giving the community tips on staying safe.

Monday’s heat advisory will last from 1 to 8 p.m. and includes a heat index of up to 109 degrees.

Officials are reminding people to drink lots of water, while also avoiding alcoholic and energy drinks.

Those outside during the day are urged to wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat.

Aging Partners will have a limited number of fans to distribute to adults ages 60 and over.

They’re asking the public to donate new fans at their office at 1005 O St. from June 14 to 24.  For more information, call 402-441-3025.

Recreation centers, libraries and senior centers will have air conditioning to allow people to cool off.

Neighborhood pools will be hosting Family Swim Nights from 6 to 8 p.m. for $10 per family on Monday, officials say.
