Husker football OC Mark Whipple to call plays from box after suffering injury
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska’s offensive coordinator can be added to the long list of injuries suffered by the Huskers this season.
Last Saturday, Mark Whipple was on the sidelines when Michigan’s A.J. Henning plowed into the 65-year-old coach on a kickoff return.
The injury caused the game to stop for a short period in the second quarter, as Whipple was checked on before being brought to the bench.
Whipple was then taken to the locker room at halftime, and interim head coach Mickey Joseph called plays in the second half.
“I tore my knee up in 1976 playing shortstop against Rhode Island,” he said. “So it felt the same way.”
Whipple said on Wednesday that he would call plays up in the box for the last two games of the season.
“I just got a sprained MCL or something like that,” he said.
On the difference between coaching in the box versus on the field, Whipple said you have a better view of the field.
“Casey will probably be happy I’m up there, nah just kidding,” Whipple joked.

The Huskers’ offense will have a lot of questions to answer against Wisconsin, as the team is unsure whether or not QB Casey Thompson will play.
As of right now, with Chubba Purdy officially out with a high ankle sprain, Logan Smothers could be Saturday’s starter.

The Huskers are set to face the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday at 11 a.m. It will be broadcast on ESPN.
