LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska State Patrol released the results of its campaign that hoped to curb distracted driving on Tuesday.

Troopers were on patrol to be on the lookout for distracted drivers during the “U Drive. U Text. U Pay” campaign, which lasted from April 3 to Sunday.

During the campaign, troopers ticketed seven drivers on suspicion of using a phone while driving, according to the patrol.

“Distracted driving crashes claim an average of more than 3,000 lives across the country every year,” said Col. John Bolduc, the patrol’s superintendent, in a press release. “We’re asking all drivers to commit to safe driving with a simple two-step process: buckle up and put your phone down every time you get behind the wheel.”

Troopers also arrested 25 drivers on suspicion of impaired driving.  The patrol says 489 drivers were cited on suspicion of speeding.

Additional enforcement was paid by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s highway safety office.
