Storms across Nebraska likely on Tuesday, cooling down after that

Big changes start today. We’ll be cooler and windy this afternoon with highs in the 80s as a cold front approaches. With that front, storms are likely. These storms will start by the afternoon and continuing Tuesday evening.

Here’s a play-by-play of Tuesday.

First, small chance to see hit/miss showers after about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Scattered storms start popping up after noon, likely that some will be severe. Storms form a line with the cold front by early Tuesday evening, with arrival in Lincoln around 6-7 p.m. as it continues east.

There is a risk of severe weather with this for Nebraska, too. There’s an Enhanced (Level 3 of 5) risk for numerous severe storms possible in south central Nebraska.

Tues Spc

Breaking down each weather hazard, all are possible on Tuesday. Starting with the risk for tornadoes, we cannot rule out a brief tornado or two especially in the brown shaded region. A tornado could form with some of the isolated cells early in the afternoon, and they’ll be possible if any segments of the line of storms Tuesday evening start to “bow” out.

Tor Tues

Another concern is the possibility of large hail with some of these storms. The red and dashed area indicates better chances of hail overall, with some of that hail maybe 2″ or larger.

Hail Tues

Damaging winds will also be possible, more so for Lincoln and areas in eastern Nebraska as the line forms by Tuesday evening. Everyone has a risk for severe weather, but the better chances for these strong storms is through central Nebraska.

Stay tuned for updates as we continue to get the latest information. Stay weather aware today, letting friends and family know that storms are likely today.

Cooler air expected through the end of this week, with daily highs dropping off into the 60s by Friday. Friday night, beware of a potential frost for the first time this season.
