Matt Rhule says Nebraska is improving faster than Temple, Baylor

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Matt Rhule has seen more success in his first year at Nebraska than at Temple and Baylor.

At a press conference Monday, Rhule detailed the contrasts between the Huskers and his two previous collegiate stints.

Rhule led Temple to a 2-10 season in his first year in Philadelphia.

In Rhule’s sophomore season at Temple, the Owls got off to a 4-2 start.  But Temple then faltered and finished the season at 6-6.

“We just fought to get wins down the stretch,” he said.

Year one at Baylor was a forgettable one.  Rhule and the Bears finished the season with a 1-11 record.

In his second year, the team was “very up and down week to week,” according to Rhule.

“We upset Kansas State and then we, you know, go to West Virginia, we get our brains beat in on a Thursday night,” he said.

Despite the ups and downs, Baylor finished the season 6-6 and defeated Vanderbilt in the Texas Bowl.

In less than a season, Rhule said Nebraska is already “far ahead” of where Temple and Baylor were in year two.

Nebraska is one win away from bowl eligibility.  The Huskers haven’t been to a bowl game since 2016.

“I think the difference with these guys is they understand the process and they’re much more process-orientated,” he said.

Rhule also said the Huskers have “bought into” what the coaches have asked them to do.

Nebraska could clinch bowl eligibility Saturday with a win on the road against Michigan State.

If the Huskers lose, Nebraska will need to win against Maryland, Wisconsin or Iowa.
