How domestic violence victims can find resources in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Domestic violence is one of the most prevalent crimes in the United States, with nearly 10 million victims, according to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence.

It’s no different in Nebraska, where 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will have experienced some sort of physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes, the organization said.

But experts said domestic violence does not start or end with just physical attacks; it can be much more hidden.

Capt. Jake Dilsaver of the Lincoln Police Department’s special victims unit said it’s about power and control.

“It starts in various forms of manipulation or control tactics as intimidation,” he said.

If you think you may be experiencing domestic violence, visit the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence’s website.  Or if the situation is dire, call 911.

But it may not be as simple as that. Some people are in such fear of being attacked that they feel they can’t call someone.

Dilsaver said a discreet option is to text 911.

Once you’re able to get out of a situation, it’s important to have somewhere safe to go.

The Friendship Home in Lincoln can house people in a discreet location but cannot accommodate everyone.

The People’s City Mission helps shelter anyone immediately, including those suffering from domestic violence.

Pastor Tom Barber, CEO of the mission, said it is not a domestic violence shelter.

“However, the vast majority of the people who stay at the mission on the family side are coming because of domestic abuse,” he said.

Barber said about 70% to 80% of all women in the shelter are victims of domestic violence, and he said it’s one of the leading causes of homelessness in the city.

While victims are at the mission, the staff helps connect them to other resources across town.

The mission works closely with organizations like the Friendship Home to get women into a more long-term shelter.

The People’s City Mission also helps victims sign up for Section 8 housing.
