Officials offer tips to keep kids safe before next round of winter weather hits Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Another winter storm is set to hit eastern Nebraska Thursday and Friday.

On top of forecasted snow, the weekend will be full of dangerously cold temperatures.

The non-profit, The Family Initiative, has tips on how to keep your family safe during this latest bout of winter weather.

First, make sure to cover your babies with blankets and put them in thin layers when you’re driving.

The American Academy of Pediatrics said never place a child in a car seat with a bulky or puffy coat on. It can cause serious injuries to the child if you were to get into a car accident.

Instead, officials said to dress your children in layers and put a blanket or coat on top of them after strapping them into the car seat.

Also, the non-profit said to leave something important like a purse or briefcase in the backseat with your child so you don’t forget them in a car in below freezing temps.

Also, make sure you have an emergency kit ready to go which includes first aid, water and snacks.

You never know when you may get stranded in the middle of a winter storm.

Nebraska State Patrol said it helped out more than 300 motorists during the first round of winter weather earlier this week.
