Nebraska’s Trev Alberts will resign to take Texas A&M job

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts is leaving his position, according to an email sent to his staff.

Alberts said in the email obtained by Channel 8 that he is accepting the athletic director role at Texas A&M.

“I am very sorry for the timing and that I was not able to communicate these changes to you in person,” he wrote.

The Houston Chronicle broke the news Wednesday morning, setting off a frenzy of speculation.

Officials at both universities told Channel 8 early in the afternoon that they had no knowledge of the potential move.

At 4:47 p.m., Alberts sent an email to athletic department staff announcing his resignation.

“I am grateful for all that we accomplished together and believe that because of you, Nebraska is well positioned for the evolving changes within our industry,” he wrote.

Texas A&M announced that it had hired Alberts shortly after.

Alberts said in a statement from the University of Nebraska that he knows the timing “is not ideal.”

“I apologize in advance for any negative impact that it might have,” he said.

Alberts said he was grateful for his combined 15 years at the university system’s Omaha and Lincoln campuses.

“My family and I want to say thank you for all the special memories that we were able to create together,” he said.

Interim NU President Chris Kabourek said he’s confident the university will find a “visionary leader” to fill Alberts’ shoes.

“I’m disappointed to see Trev leave, but I am grateful for his 15 years of service to the University of Nebraska,” he said in the statement.

Alberts signed an extension with Nebraska in November.

His new contract included a base salary of $1.7 million, which would have bumped up to $2.1 million in 2026.

If Alberts stayed through September 2025, he would have received a $500,000 retention bonus.

The contract also featured buyouts that will be paid to NU if Alberts were to leave for another opportunity, officials said.
