Man enters plea deal in killing of Lincoln man at Fonner Park

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was convicted Wednesday in the killing of a Lincoln man at Fonner Park last year.

Logan Hunts Horse, 21, was initially charged with first-degree murder and five other felonies, but the charges were lessened after he entered a plea deal.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and no contest to using a deadly weapon to commit a felony, according to court documents.

Hall County District Court Judge Patrick Lee found Hunts Horse guilty of both charges.

On March 9, 2023, the Grand Island Police Department was sent to the horse stables at Fonner Park on a report of a man who was not breathing.

Officers then found 62-year-old Todd Scherer’s body, which had a gunshot wound to the torso, in a tack room.

Police said Hunts Horse shot Scherer once in the stomach.

He later returned to the scene and, discovering that Scherer was still alive, hit him with a baseball bat.

Police said a teenager who was there then stole Scherer’s wallet.

That teen, Austin Kelly, is being tried as an adult. The 17-year-old is awaiting trial in four felonies, including robbery and accessory to a felony.

Hunts Horse will be sentenced on July 30.
