LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The No. 18-ranked Nebraska softball team kicked off the Troy Cox Classic with a bang Friday morning, routing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 20-1 in five innings.

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but a 2-run second inning by the Huskers gave them the lead and they never looked back.

Nebraska rattled off consecutive 8-run outbursts in the third and forth innings to mark its third run-rule win of the season.

As a team, the Huskers totaled 13 hits, 18 RBIs and only left two runners stranded on base. 18 different players scored a run in Friday’s game.

Emmerson Cope (1-0) earned the win for the Huskers, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Cope only allowed one hit.

Lauren Camenzind and Samantha Bland led the way from the plate, each tallying two hits and two RBIs. Bland also added a double to her stat line.

Ava Kuszak, Jordyn Bahl, Talia Tokheim, Alina Felix and Malia Thoms each hit a home run in the game.

Thoms’ homer was a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the fourth inning, marking the first home run of her career.

This game marks the fourth time in program history the Huskers have scored 20-plus runs in a game. The last time was in 2016 in a 26-4 win over Maryland.

Nebraska will continue action in the Troy Cox Classic this afternoon against New Mexico State at 3 p.m.

That game can be heard on Husker Radio Network.
