Suspect in Seward slaying ordered to be evaluated at mental hospital

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in Seward will undergo a mental competency evaluation.
On Tuesday, Judge James Stecker ordered the Lincoln Regional Center to examine whether 54-year-old Casey Kindt is fit to stand trial.
Doctors there will assess whether he understands the proceedings against him and is capable of assisting in his own defense.

Kindt’s attorney requested the evaluation, and prosecutors did not object.
On Feb. 8, court documents say Kindt broke into the home of 36-year-old Jamie Hagen and shot her at least four times.
Kindt then shot himself, an arrest affidavit says.
Hagen died at the scene. Kindt was critically wounded but survived.

A child was in the home at the time of the shooting and locked herself in a bedroom until officers arrived, authorities said.
Kindt is charged with first-degree murder, burglary, child abuse and three weapons violations.
The judge will review the psychiatric hospital’s findings at a hearing in May 19.
