Police: Child died from ‘extreme heat exposure’ after being left inside vehicle in Hastings

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A child died Monday after being left inside a parked vehicle in Hastings, police say.

At around 5 p.m., officers were sent to East South Street and South Elm Avenue on a report of an unresponsive infant inside a parked vehicle.

The child, a 5-month-old boy, was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to police.

Investigators determined the child died from “extreme heat exposure.”

Later that day, officers arrested the child’s father, Jeremy Hansen, on suspicion of negligent child abuse resulting in death.

“This is a heartbreaking incident and our hearts go out to the family, friends, first responders, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss,” police said in a news release. “We extend our deepest condolences and are committed to supporting those impacted during this difficult time.”
