Cold Thursday- Dangerous Cold & Snow Friday
Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect for NE Nebraska from tonight through Friday morning. During this time, wind chill values are expected to drop to 30–35 degrees below zero, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed to the elements for extended periods.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for all of Nebraska from tonight through Sunday. Through this weekend, wind chill values will consistently range between 20–30 degrees below zero, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.
The first half of Thursday, temperatures will be in the 30s under cloudy skies before the strong arctic cold sets in Thursday evening. Wind chill values go sub-zero as early as 8pm.
Light snow showers are expected to start across NW Nebraska Friday morning. Snow will gradually move southeast into Friday afternoon. Timing: 11am Friday- 5pm Saturday. DRY air will occur further north and SW. SE Nebraska near the KS/NE border has the better chance for 3″+ of snow. Stay tuned for more updates.
The best chance for snow accumulations above 2″ will be from NW Nebraska down to SE Nebraska. A small area south of I-80 near the KS/NE border has a better chance for snow accumulations up to 3″+. This snow will be light and fluffy. Winds during this time will stay relatively light, making for better accumulations.
The coldest wind chills will occur Friday morning and Sunday morning across eastern Nebraska. Early next week, wind chills lessen across the state.
