Michigan Senate Democratic primary race ends with Abdul El-Sayed winning

DETROIT, Mich. (KLKN) — After a tight, competitive race, Progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate Democratic primary. Moderate Rep. Haley Stevens called El-Sayed to concede the race, according to ABC.

El-Sayed now faces Republican Rep. Mike Rogers for Michigan Senate. According to ABC, the winner of the election in November could decide which party controls the Senate.

El-Sayed said the odds were stacked against them in a speech after winning.

“We took on a machine. You’re not supposed to be able to beat $70 million of outside spending,” El-Sayed said. “That’s a record amount of money spent in a campaign against a Democrat in a primary in any campaign. You’re not supposed to be able to beat that. What we showed is that the power of our many is greater than the power of their money.”

Stevens offered support for El-Sayed.

“This was a thorough and rigorous campaign that brought out the full span of views within the Democratic Party — and that is why we have primaries,” Stevens said. “I am proud to have put up my hand to serve, and prouder to continue to work together to make sure this Senate seat remains blue, that we flip the United States Senate and continue the work for Michigan.”

President Donald Trump posted to socials after El-Sayed’s win. Trump said El-Sayed is a “communist loser”, saying the polls were off in this primary election.
