7-year-old drowns in Lake McConaughy, investigation ongoing

OGALLALA, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission confirmed the drowning of a 7-year-old boy at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area yesterday, Aug. 6.

Around 9:30 p.m., two children from Ogallala were found in the water, unresponsive. Bystanders began CPR and called authorities. Responding officers and emergency medical personnel took over efforts when they arrived.

The other child, a 5-year-old girl, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Nebraska Game and Parks said they are keeping their thoughts with the family during the difficult time. They also urged individuals to review water safety.

Conservation officers are currently investigating.
