Cold a distant memory, with storms possible Sunday night
Temperatures on Saturday starting in the single digits, but by the afternoon, it was much better outside. In the days to come, the cold will feel like more and more of a distant memory. By the afternoon, high temperatures ranging from the 40s to the low 50s across the state meant everyone was warmer compared to Friday afternoon!
Saturday evening will bring mild temperatures compared to what we have seen recently, too. Temperatures will fall back into the 30s following sunset and only drop into the mid and upper 20s overnight.
Then, we continue to warm on Sunday. With mostly sunny skies throughout the morning and afternoon, temperatures should easily climb into the upper 50s if not lower 60s throughout southeast Nebraska. Winds will start to pick up later, too, so we may see our warmest temperatures by Sunday evening. That’s ahead of our next rain — not snow — chance.
After dark, the familiar sound of thunder may return back into the picture. From Sunday evening on, the chance for rain begins with a few scattered storms, then more widespread rainfall through SE Nebraska after midnight (below shows 8:30 p.m. compared to midnight).
A couple of these storms could be severe, but on the lower end. Some hail and/or stronger winds could be associated with those, if they manage to develop in southeast Nebraska, along the Kansas border.
With the stronger storms anticipating more of a southward extent, we could see some good rainfall come from what does develop through southeastern and eastern Nebraska. A few models show that anywhere from 0.5 – 1″, with some localized spots, especially along the NE/IA/MO borders, to see more.
Because of this, Lincoln is now just outside of a Marginal (1/5) risk for severe weather heading into the late hours of Sunday night. The better chance for stronger storms exists from Texas through Kansas, as the history of this continues to trend south. With that being said, areas like Hebron to Falls City have a chance to see a couple strong storms come from this setup.
