‘We knew he was going to be a special kid’: Former Husker set to play in Super Bowl LIX

Jurgens

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Cam Jurgens, the Nebraska native is set to play in the biggest game of his life on Sunday.

He’ll be starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Jurgens has churned out a great season in his first year as a starter, earning Pro Bowl honors.

But it was a long road to get to this stage for the former Husker

Jurgens grew up in Beatrice.

According to his former head coach, he knew Jurgens would be something special.

“We knew he was going to be a special kid then,” said Bob Sexton, Jurgen’s former Beatrice Head Coach his first two years in high school. “He just kept growing into that body. I think his senior year he was about 245.”

Cam played tight end all throughout his youth, before being asked to switch to Center when he played for the Cornhuskers.

Sexton says that’s a testament to his attitude and ability,

“Everybody in Southeast Nebraska is so proud of him,” said Sexton. ‘When I watch the Eagles, about 50-60% of the time I catch myself watching No. 51. I’m not even watching the play.”

Jurgens is one of three former players that Sexton has coached that have made it to the NFL, but come Sunday night, hell become the first player to  step on the field at a super bowl.

Sexton and his family will definitely be cheering on the former husker.

“We’re really excited for him. We’re all rooting for the Eagles. I guarantee most people in Beatrice are rooting for the Eagles.

Super Bowl 59 is set to kickoff Sunday night at 5:30.
