Lincoln Animal Control warns public of scam involving lost pets

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Animal Control is warning the public of an elaborate scam involving lost pets.

In a Facebook post on Monday, officials said many local residents with missing pets have been contacted by someone impersonating an animal control officer.

The scammer is using animal control’s phone number and contacting pet owners who have recently posted online about a missing pet.

According to officials, the scammer tells the pet owner they found their pet, but to return it, they will need to pay through a link or a cash app.

Animal control says there is never a charge to leave a lost pet report.

If a pet is found and taken to the Capital Humane Society, there is an impound fee, which is collected in person when you pick up your pet.

If you think you are a victim of this scam, call the Lincoln Police Department at 402-441-6000.
