Man sentenced for 2022 Kearney robbery that turned deadly

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A man was sentenced Monday for the fatal shooting of a man in Kearney in 2022.

Romeo Chambers, 28, was sentenced to seven to 20 years for manslaughter, second-degree assault and first-degree attempted assault.

With credit for about a year and a half already spend behind bars, he could be eligible for parole in as soon as two years.

The shooting happened on Jan. 16, 2022.

Police said 31-year-old Jaren Shinpaugh was killed during a robbery.

An arrest warrant was issued for Chambers in March 2022, but court documents say he eluded capture for almost two years.

He was arrested in Arizona in January 2024.

Chambers was initially charged with seven felonies, including second-degree murder.

But he made a plea deal in February that reduced the murder charge to manslaughter and dropped most of the counts.

Chambers is the last known person to be convicted and sentenced in connection with the shooting.

Joseph Garcia was convicted in 2023 of accessory to homicide and possession of meth.

Chenoa Lemburg was found guilty of accessory to a felony.
