Accumulating snow possible for eastern Nebraska

With active snow falling across the state (especially west/southwest Nebraska) through Friday morning, it’ll be important to check the road conditions if you’re going home from Lincoln to those locations.

It was a very frigid start to Friday morning, with single-digit wind chills.

Temperatures for the Husker football game were in the upper 20s by kickoff, with highs today only in the low 30s.

We may see a few flurries fly, but the best chance for flurries is in northeast Nebraska, where some of the dry air is expected to saturate first. We should have a lot of dry air in the low levels through most of Friday, making it hard for any snow to survive to the ground.

So, round one is what is happening in western Nebraska. That will be what continues through Friday night into early Saturday.

Round two from this system comes up from the south, impacting areas south of Interstate 80 for the most part during the day Saturday. Latest trends have shifted the track of the system a bit more north, so far southeast Nebraska has better chances for accumulating snow.

Here’s a look at one of the latest Stormcast runs on how Friday and Saturday play out:

The latest winter weather alerts as of Friday morning include a Winter Storm Warning for western Nebraska (pink) through early Saturday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Saturday night, with central Nebraska added as of Friday morning for snow expected.

Again, it’ll take some time for eastern Nebraska and central Nebraska to remove the dry air (saturating more of the low levels), so flurries are possible until that happens.

The heaviest snow will fall in western and southwest Nebraska, with less as you go farther north and east.

Most of south/southeastern Nebraska will see snow from Saturday’s round. Lincoln is expecting around 1 inch from Saturday.

Accumulations will not last long in eastern Nebraska, as we warm the rest of the weekend Sunday into next week. The end of November looks quiet at this point.
