Winter weather coming for Nebraska; small chances this weekend

Dense fog has led to freezing fog in some areas overnight and through this morning. With that, some slick surfaces are out there especially on walkways, so take things slow through the commute. Fog will continue to be an issue Thursday morning into the afternoon.

A Dense Fog Advisory continues for most of central and western Nebraska until noon Thursday. A Freezing Fog Advisory in effect for portions of the Panhandle.

Winter weather is also expected across the state in various forms heading into this weekend and early next week. In fact, there are three separate systems that bring the chance for winter weather across Nebraska.

For Lincoln, the first couple systems will be weaker, bringing small chances for light rain mixing with snow Friday night and a smaller chance for light snow Saturday night.

The better chance for rain/snow mix transitioning to accumulating snow comes from a stronger system Monday into Tuesday.

Weather Timeline

The first system will come for southwest Nebraska first. A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect by 9 a.m. Thursday and continue until noon Friday. Freezing drizzle, fog and light accumulating snow will be possible the rest of the day Thursday into Friday.

By Friday evening, the eastern two-thirds of Nebraska has a chance at some light rain mixing with snow, with any accumulations less than a half inch. Most of us won’t see much until early next week. Saturday evening, there’s an even smaller chance at some light snow for eastern Nebraska coming from the north, but most will miss that round.

The stronger system is still set to arrive by Monday and continue into Tuesday. The track of that system still remains in question, so the timing and transition to snow (with accumulations) are still uncertain at this time. Generally, a system will track to our south and bring most of us a good shot at accumulating snow into the first half of Tuesday.

Next week looks to be colder, but snow on the ground would drop high temperatures even more through this event. We’re keeping an eye on all the moving parts and possibilities.
