Second winter storm for Nebraska this week comes Thursday; near blizzard conditions Friday

A second winter storm is coming for Nebraska this week. And not to mention, it will bring a lot colder air that will last well into next week.

A Winter Storm Warning for eastern Nebraska started 3 p.m. Thursday.

For Lincoln, this lasts until 9 p.m. Friday with the potential for heavy snow and wind gusts nearing 40 mph, especially Friday morning/afternoon into the evening.

For everyone else, this warning lasts until Friday afternoon, if not Friday night. More specifics for your county can be found here.

Winter Weather Advisories started this morning and afternoon for central and western Nebraska.

Less snow is expected in these areas, but north winds up to 35 mph will still be a factor.

The snow will start up in the Panhandle and northwest Nebraska, skirting along northern Nebraska into the early afternoon.

As the system deepens, more snow will come up from the south for southeast Nebraska, picking up around the evening commute.

More widespread snow will then fall in eastern Nebraska into Friday morning.

Snowfall will be greater across southeast and eastern Nebraska, similar to what areas got hit hard the last time. Less snow is possible as you head toward southwest Nebraska.

This will be a drier snow, easier to pick up and get tossed about by the wind and add up.

Again, strong winds creating near blizzard (whiteout) conditions will be possible.

Periods of blowing snow will pick up late tonight into Friday morning, with considerable blowing snow possible for most of the day Friday even after the snowfall ends.

In combination with this storm and the jet stream dipping south, arctic air is headed our way.

Below is a snapshot at wind chills across Nebraska expected by Friday morning.

Fri Morning Wind Chill 7a

With that, there is a Wind Chill Advisory for most of the state starting Thursday night into Friday morning.

Wind chills as low as minus 25 are possible. Then southeast Nebraska is under another advisory Friday night into Saturday before joining the Wind Chill Warning the rest of Nebraska is in through Tuesday morning.

Wind chills from 40 to 50 below zero will be possible this weekend into early next week, especially Sunday morning.

We will finally catch a break from Mother Nature throwing the kitchen sink at us by late next week, as the weather settles, and we start to warm up again.
