T’storms, rain and snow all likely in Nebraska later this weekend

After a few sprinkles around town, we’ve missed most of the thunderstorms and wintry mix that passed through northeast Nebraska early Friday morning. We’ve got another small chance to see some light snow Saturday, but most of the precipitation is expected Sunday through next Tuesday.

Saturday morning’s round will miss most of us to the north, staying mainly north of I-80. Some light snow/wintry mix is possible through the first half of Saturday over these areas.

Saturday Chance

We’re not expecting any accumulation across southeast Nebraska, but a there’s better chance to see up to an inch of accumulation across north Nebraska from Saturday’s round.

But plenty of March madness here at home with thunderstorms, rain and snow all likely Sunday and beyond. There is a marginal severe risk (Level 1 of 5) through southern Nebraska for a few storms to organize and be borderline severe with hail the primary threat by Sunday evening.

Svr Sunday

Stormcast below takes you through a timeline of late Saturday into early Tuesday with light rain possible first Sunday morning, then as the system deepens through the state, thunderstorms and heavier rain possible into Sunday evening. Snow will first develop on the backside in western Nebraska, sweeping through from west to east. A transition to snow is expected by the second half of Monday, with a brief period of freezing rain possible as the transition happens.

Light snow will wrap up in southeast Nebraska Tuesday morning.

Winter impacts include accumulating snow especially through north and north-central Nebraska. Below is a look at the snow potential through Tuesday morning.

Snow Through Tuesday

The other impacts with this incoming system include blowing snow and high winds throughout the event starting up Saturday night. Strong winds (hour-by-hour below) first out of the south turn to be out of the north – gusts up to 40-50 mph possible! This at times could create whiteout conditions.

After that, we’ll see temperatures moderate through the second half of the week, with additional rain chances around Easter. Stay tuned for more updates over the weekend from the Storm Alert Team.
